“Whilst they probably won’t choose to listen to it over an actual read of the Thomas books, the BBC Audio Thomas & Friends – The Little Old Engine & Other Stories CD could certainly help while away 1 hour and 15 minutes of a long car journey.”

Initial thoughts: The boys fell on the BBC Audio Thomas & Friends – The Little Old Engine & Other Stories CD with excitement when it first appeared. Anything Thomas related is a big hit in this household, so they couldn’t wait to get it into the CD player.

We liked: It looks, feels and sounds like the Thomas that they know and love. The stories are read by Michael Angelis, who reads the older Thomas DVDs as well (before Piers Brosnan got in on the act). The songs are definitely Thomas songs, infuriatingly catchy and the boys sang their little hearts out to them.

We weren’t keen on:
It’s a talking book, there’s very little not to like. Personally I find Thomas pretty dull and the songs quite repetitive. The boys have listened to it once but haven’t asked for it again, so I’m not sure it has really caught their imagination like the books complete with pictures do.

Overall: It’s Thomas, and small boys will love it. Whilst they probably won’t choose to listen to the BBC Audio Thomas & Friends – The Little Old Engine & Other Stories CD over an actual read of the Thomas books, it could certainly help while away 1 hour and 15 minutes of a long car journey. In my ideal world I’d have bought it together with the books so we could look at the books together and then I think they would be keener to listen to it in the car.
