“The base of the Playmobil Pirate Island Superset is a little limiting but the pirate figures are fun, and the hidden treasure compartment kept Flea entertained for ages. And – best of all – a firing cannon!”

Initial thoughts: The Playmobil Pirate Island Superset set includes a wrecked pirate ship, complete with two pirate figures, some hidden treasure that fits under the floor of the boat, and a shark. And – best of all – a firing cannon. Yes, a cannon that fires a little rubber and plastic dart (sounds bad, but it does have a rounded, rubber tip). Brilliant.

We liked: The firing cannon is definitely the best thing about this set as far as Flea is concerned. It fires quite far – it can easily travel 6 or 8 feet at a time, but doesn’t seem to hurt the children when they’re playing. The pirate figures are fun, and the hidden treasure compartment kept Flea entertained for ages.

We weren’t keen: The shipwreck sits on quite a large yellow base, which is a bit pointless – the pirates can’t stand on it, and it just takes up space in the toy drawer. Also, the box points out that the shark floats – which is great, but the ship doesn’t, which Flea found a bit disappointing. Although, you know, it’s a ship wreck so as an adult I can rationalise it.

Overall: The Playmobil Pirate Island Superset is a nice addition to a pirate Playmobil collection, but the base is a little limiting. I’m also possibly weirdly liberal, but I found it kind of amazing how many weapons two pirates need – daggers, swords, guns and a cannon?
