Initial thoughts: Playmobil is renowned for its many inventive and imaginative play-sets but the Playmobil Playground Set is a bit more prosaic – a group of children in a playground, complete with swings, see-saw, slide, sandpit and various bikes and scooters. There are, as is often the case with Playmobil, a load of teeny tiny pieces like flowers and a tiny spade for the sandpit (in our family we put all of these in a special box called “the choking box” to be returned when Flea is old enough not to choke on them, stick them in her ears, up her nose or anything else potentially injurious).
We liked: This is a really lovely play set. Flea is just at that stage of development where she loves to play schools, nursery, playtime or ‘making friends’ and the fact that this comes with 11 child figures is fantastic – there are very few other Playmobil sets that come with more than one or two kids.
The items for the playground are also lovely, with some great touches. The see-saw is a crocodile, for example, while the slide is a dinosaur. There’s a lovely carousel with six individual seats, which Flea really enjoys. It’s a small thing, but I liked that the kids are all dressed in different sorts of t-shirts and not in plain outfits – each of the figures has been given a name, and Flea can easily tell all the figures apart.
We weren’t keen: There are some small bits we weren’t too fussed about but that’s not a negative particularly – at 4, Flea’s at the youngest end of the age suitability for the toy, and I’m sure older children would love playing with the smaller, more detailed items.
Overall: The Playmobil Playground Set is a really great toy that’s perfectly pitched for children aged 4 and 5, who enjoy pretend play around schools, playtime, making friends. There are some lovely items, and the quality is very impressive, with each piece strong enough for robust handling by pre-schoolers.
