Initial thoughts: Frankenstein’s monster isn’t the only thing that’s rising from the dead this halloween. Woolworth’s has been resurrected online and is supplying a range of childrens party costumes. This green head-to-toe ensemble will only set you back about a tenner, and is a lot quicker to assemble than the Mary Shelley version. But be warned – the monster inside might well have a life of its own!
We liked: The Woolworths Frankenstein Costume is entirely toddler-friendly. No zips, no straps, no buttons and no buckles – just strategically placed velcro. Even the most floppily resistant child could be completely transformed by this outfit in a matter of just a few minutes. And it’s as easy to remove. The problem of creating a something horrible on top has been cleverly solved by a kind of balaclava complete with neck-bolts and precipitous forehead, held in place with a soft, velcro-fastened chin-strap. There’s even some frightening footwear-covering boots to complete the top-to-toe ensemble.
We weren’t so keen: The outfit’s strength – light, soft stretchy material that’s easy to pull on over a child’s clothing – might also be its weakness. It’s a kind of nylon, static-inducing and thermally insulating fabric that will be great on a cold night, but had Charlie desperate to remove it after just five minutes indoors. If you’re having your halloween party indoors this year, I’d bear that in mind. On the other hand, the thought of all those treats should keep your little monster happy.
Overall: The Woolworths Frankenstein Costume is a great value, child-friendly and effective-looking outfit. Its near tantrum-free design is a real winner and whether you’ve got a little monster – or you simply want to make one – this should be a great addition to the halloween chamber of horrors.
