Initial Thoughts: When I pulled the Cancer Research UK Advent Calendar out of the box I thought that it looked quite pretty and nicely festive. There is a red triangular tree-shaped outer with a multi-coloured tree-shaped interior made up of boxes. Each box has a small drawer decorated with a seasonal shape and a accent coloured ribbon.  It’s nice to have a calendar that looks attractive as well as offering the children a count-down to Christmas. Cancer Research says this is not suitable as a toy, though, so you do need to keep it out of the reach of little fingers, and supervise younger children carefully when they’re using it.
We Liked: The Cancer Research Wooden Advent Calendar is nicely painted in subtle holiday colours (dark green, red, warm yellow) and has pretty, varied designs on each of the 24 drawers, which appear to be hand-painted.  It’s really very pretty and I like the idea of having a calendar that can be used for many years (environmentally it’s far better than buying new each year!) and, of course, it’s perfect to have an option to buy a calendar from a charity rather than the High Street.

We Weren’t Keen: Little Miss is probably too young to appreciate the calendar, and I have to say the construction probably wouldn’t stand up to too much close inspection by a toddler. There’s nothing to hang the calendar on, so I think it’s designed to stand on the mantle or on a table – so for this reason I wouldn’t recommend it be placed within the reach of younger children. The Cancer Research calendar is probably better suited to families with older children, for that reason.

Overall: If you’re looking for a wooden calendar that will benefit a great cause this Christmas, then the Cancer Research UK Wooden Advent Calendar is a pretty, nicely decorated option. However, do be warned that it’s not suitable for younger children, and it’s primarily designed as a decorative item rather than a “let the kids loose on it” toy.
