Initial thoughts: I usually love everything from JoJo Maman Bebe, so I was looking forward to receiving their hand embroidered linen advent calendar. I’m sorry to say I was disappointed and completely underwhelmed. This is a white fabric square with 24 numbered pockets, each big enough to hold a couple of sweets or a very small toy. It’s almost plain apart from the embroidered “Merry Christmas” at the bottom.  We hung it up and made sad faces at each other.

We liked: I love the idea of a reusable advent calendar, something special to bring out each year and I like the fact that you can choose what to put in the twenty four pockets, so we don’t have to overdose the kids on chocolate if we don’t want to. The calendar itself is nice quality, and if you have a white theme for your Christmas decor, this is one of the few advent calendars we’ve seen that’s plain. Sadly, though, we’re not a very ‘plain’ family.

We weren’t keen: It is extremely plain and quite small. It looks like an embroidered a bag for life and I can’t embroider. It smells funny too. You might be better of washing this before you use it – the calendar actually made the chcolate we put in it smell a bit funny. We still ate it, though.

Overall: I have to say it looks a million times better with a toy or Quality Street in each pocket. If your house was tastefully decorated with the odd ethnic touch and this was the only festive trimming you had it would be fine, if you liked that sort of thing. In our busy, toy-strewn house it faded into the background. We’re looking forward to eating the Quality Street though.
