Initial thoughts:  What a clever idea! The “advent calendar” is a wooden box with 24 hinged doors that when opened reveal an individual piece of a traditional Bethlehem nativity scene so your family can build the scene slowly throughout the holiday season.  I was very pleased at the idea of getting a traditional advent calendar – High School Musical and Hannah Montana advent calendars just do not seem right!

The box arrived on time, and in one piece, wrapped in a sturdy cardboard box and styrofoam. Inside, each invidual piece came its own bubble wrap, so it’s all well protected. My girls (ages 4, 5 and 7) could hardly wait to get it out of the box. After peeling away the bubble wrap, I was very pleased to see it was already assembled and ready to use!

We liked: The stable sits on top of the 24 mini cabinets (12 on each side) and spins 360 degrees for easy access. It is a traditional scene, with palm trees, a magnetic strip to attach the north star, and a wooden stable with hay (glued in place). The piece has nice detail , such as bevelled edges and there’s room in each compartment for chocolate too. Each little figure is very detailed, and the faces are cute enough to be very child-friendly, too.

We didn’t like: The pieces weren’t numbered … so you need to remember which piece goes into each box, or make up your own system. I numbered each piece with a pencil so we could remember for next year.

Overall: This is a quality piece that I’m sure will be handed down from generation to generation each Christmas. It’s the perfect alternative to the High School Musical type calendar, and reminds children what Christmas is ACTUALLY all about. I love it!
