This Playmobil advent calendar is just brilliant. It has totally convinced my 4 year old that toy calendars are so much cooler than chocolate calendars.

Initial thoughts: It comes in a fairly hefty box and Mia’s eyes nearly popped out of her head when she saw the picture on the front of the box which shows what the calendar contains. It’s vibrant, fun and has big ‘wow’ factor. You have to ‘build’ it to begin with, which threw us a little. You create the calendar’s inner chambers and then fill them with Playmobil characters, set props, flowers etc as shown in the instructions. Very pink and very girlie.

We liked: The pieces which sit inside each ‘day’ window are fabulous, from the fairy princess leaf throne to the unicorn and the fairy carriage. We sat together one afternoon putting it together and had the best time. It has totally convinced my 4 year old that toy calendars are so much cooler than chocolate calendars.

Weren’t keen on: You had to build it. My advice would be to suss it out before you get your youngster all hyped up about it and then have to sit there for 10 minutes working out the instructions (for which there are no words, just illustrations). It’s not difficult to assemble however. Also be careful not to pop your finger through the windows while you’re building it and incur the wrath of a very angry 4 year old.

Overall: Just brilliant and we will most definitely be buying these again. Nearly £14 does seem rather a lot to pay for an advent calendar but you do end up with a quality toy that will last way past Christmas. Being able to sit down together and build it seemed like a chore to begin with, but it proved a great way to spend an afternoon – and get all hyped up ready for Christmas.
