Initial thoughts: The Vtech Animal Fun Bounce & Ride Giraffe is a fab toddler exercise bike in the shape of a giraffe! To make exercise fun for little ones, the idea of the toy is that the child pedals the bike to chase animals they can see on the 5-inch LCD screen. The bike and screen use games to help youngsters learn about music, movement, letters and numbers, and is suitable for children from around 18 months up to 36 months, so perfect for my two!

We liked: When Presley, our two year old, first saw the Giraffe his eyes nearly popped out of his head. He ran over to it and stayed on it for the entire day. He only got off when we picked him up and sat him at the table for meals! His younger brother, Cash, is too small to sit on the seat but stands astride the Giraffe’s neck and presses the buttons on the console. It was a wonderful moment as we watched Presley pedalling properly for the first time. The massive grin on his face told us that he knew this was a special moment too. It’s wonderful that you can teach your toddler to pedal a bike in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Presley and Cash love to press the eight animal buttons to see the animal on the screen – the monkey is by far the most popular in our house. The Giraffe is light enough to move around easily, but sturdy enough to remain upright and in position when in use. It is well made with no rough edges and simple to assemble. There are many songs and the Giraffe speaks with a friendly English accent, it also has a really cute face!

We weren’t keen: The chasing, counting and number games seem quite advanced for the age range of the toy. It is possible that my son is the only one who has played with the Giraffe and not followed the instructions to pedal faster or chase the gorilla, but I would be surprised. The Giraffe is perhaps a little more complicated than necessary. Presley hasn’t discovered how to use the bounce element yet, but I’d guess that a heavier child would make more of this feature. Once built you have a Giraffe for life, it isn’t easily unbuilt.

Oh and dear Vtech, please could you add an adults only on/off switch and volume control? The Giraffe is loud. We’re not sick of the songs yet, but it’s only a matter of time!

Overall: The Vtech Animal Fun Bounce and Ride Giraffe is a popular toy with both our boys. It has been played with every day. It’s brilliant if you have no outdoor space, or for the winter when you don’t want to go outside! It’s expensive, but you can see that it’s worth the £50 that it costs. I can see it being sat along side an adult exercise bike, in a ‘like father like son’ kind of way. If only ours wasn’t being used as a clothes horse…
