Initial Thoughts: I’m all for anything that makes tummy time last for longer than a few minutes of agonised screaming so I liked the idea of the Whoozit Water Mat. It’s very bright and colourful and suitable from birth.

The mat is filled with cold water and then placed on the floor in front of a baby, hitting the mat with their hands (or heads in Ciaran’s case) makes the little stars and shapes inside the mat move around on the water.

We liked: The Whoozit Water Mat amused Ciaran enough to keep him on his tummy for much longer than normal, strengthening his tummy, neck and back muscles. Once he gets over the initial shock of being on his tummy he can see cause and effect in action – you push it and the toys move around. This held his attention well (normally he gets bored very quickly on his tummy).

I was very impressed with the strong valve on the back of the water mat – not one drop was spilled, which is more than I can say for the water mat his older brother Ben had as a baby! The edges weren’t rough and jagged so there was no worry about Ciaran grazing his face on the mat.

We weren’t keen: The Whoozit Water Mat is obviously a toy that you supervise a child with, but my constant fear when we played with the mat was that Ben would come running out of nowhere to investigate cause and effect as well – what happens if I jump on the mat? Like any water mat it never drains completely and you are left with a few drops of water stagnating in the mat which makes me feel slightly worried and can grow a little icky.

Overall: A great toy to use for a short time. If like me, you have a child that doesn’t like tummy time very much this will isn’t quite a miracle but in our house it was enough to keep a lively baby entertained for more minutes than usual, encouraging him to play on their tummy, and (hopefully) help him to strengthen those muscles!
