Build a Bear

I can’t fault the staff at our local Build a Bear store, they were exceptional and made the morning a really fun experience for Flea. She loves her soft toy and so does her cousin. But at £50 apiece, I don’t think she loves it enough to make this value for money. Other experienced parents have told me the way to make Build a Bear Work is to give kids a price limit before you go into the store, and then let them spend it how they choose – so it’s possible to get a bear for £9.99 and an outfit for another £10 or so. And it helps if you buy something at Build a Bear with 2 feet, rather than 4!

Cowboy Print Wigwam

“The retro cowboy print Wigwam is fun, and much roomier than most tents of this kind – definitely big enough for two or three children to play inside comfortably.”

Children's Wigwam play tentInitial thoughts: The wigwam (or is it a teepee?) we reviewed arrived minus a couple of pieces, but Handpicked Collection was excellent – they scanned and emailed us some new instructions, and posted a replacement part in the post for us.

Putting the tent together was pretty simple – you slide 5 poles through channels on the fabric tent, then use a piece of string (supplied) to tie it all together at the top.  Because I’m a near-midget, I had to ask a tall man to help, but if you’re over 5 feet 5, it’s a 10 minute job. Once it’s together, it looks gorgeous – but HUGE!

We liked: The retro styling is super-cute, although Flea actually wasn’t sure what a cowboy was. The fabric is a really heavy-duty cotton, which is washable and very durable, and the included ground sheet means this can be used outside in the summer, and indoors on colder days.

One of my favourite things is the size of this tent. Although it took up half of our lounge when it was up, it’s big enough for two or three kids to play in, which isn’t the case with this kind of play tent, usually. There’s even room for Mum or Dad to play inside without having to do fancy contortion. Not that I’ve ever sat in this tent while Flea’s at school. Obviously. Ahem.

We weren’t too keen: There’s no getting around the size of this tent. Literally. When it’s up in our lounge, you have to actually climb over one corner of it to get into the room. For practical reasons, then, it’s not something I’d let Flea leave out overnight – but it does collapse easily into something that can be popped under the stairs. It’s also very, very expensive – my personal tip would be to wait for a sale!

Overall: A lovely quality children’s play tent, with bags of retro charm, and brilliant if you have two or more children. If you’ve got a garden you’ll get bags of use out of the Cowboy Print Wigwam – but for the price, you’d want to.
