Initial thoughts: This is a straightforward sorting toy. The four shapes can be stacked on the pins of the stacking board and each shape comes in four colours. The stacking board can be used as a puzzle and introduces both shapes and colours. It’s recommended from age 2 but I thought it would be safe to use for younger toddlers.

We liked: It’s a simple, and yet clever toy which encourages learning and exploration of both shapes and colours, as well as promoting manual dexterity: it takes some practice to sort the shapes and fit them onto the right pins! Our two year old daughter also delights in making new shapes out of the pieces or building a tower and knocking it down.

Her creative use of the toy made us realise that there’s more to it then just learning about colours and shapes! The toy is made entirely out of wood and the size of the pieces is ideal for toddler hands, encouraging exploration. The stacking board allows focus on colours or shapes, or both combined, according to the interest of the child. It invites joint play with parents and communication about colours and shapes.

We weren’t keen: As with any toy that is made up of smallish pieces, there’s a chance that one of them ends up between cushions or under the sofa. Just as well the pieces are brightly coloured! It’s not easily stored because the pieces have a tendency to fall off.

Overall: It’s a simple yet engaging educational toy which unlike others has proven to be consistently popular. It can be used for under two year olds although they will need help with the stacking activity. Two year olds will enjoy using it as a stacking toy or exploring the handy shapes and colours. It’s sturdy and will last for more than just one child’s use.
