“While the Toy Story Soldiers Bucket O Soldiers is a relatively simple toy, I needn’t have worried – Flea was really excited and has got loads of play out of them.”

Toy Story SoldiersInitial Thoughts: The Toy Story Bucket of Soldiers is a sturdy container filled with tiny green toy soldiers – the same ones you probably remember playing with during your own childhood. There’s a mixture of standing up soldiers, lying down soldiers and a couple of soldiers with plastic parachutes, too.

I used to love toy soldiers, but I wasn’t sure how Flea would react. For starters, she’s been raised in a rigorously pacifist environment (of course) and secondly, she’s used to playing with far more detailed character figures, while these are relatively simple. I needn’t have worried – she was really excited because “They’re just like the ones in Toy Story!” apparently.

We liked: I thought once the Toy Story novelty had worn off, Flea might be bored with the toy soldiers, but actually I’ve been surprised. She treats them exactly as any other of her toy figures and uses them for imaginary play – except now she has dozens of figures, which lend themselves to all sorts of games. Flea plays schools and races and armies and – on one particular day – lining up all the soldiers and knocking them down with a Go Go Hamster. They’re easily tidied away into the bucket, which is very sturdy.

We weren’t keen: There’s a little voice in my head that suspects I could buy these soldiers without the Toy Story bucket for a fraction of the cost – you’re paying a HUGE premium for that “certificate of authenticity” in the bucket. But the storage bucket is very handy indeed, I must admit.

Overall: I do think this is needlessly expensive, but if your child is a Toy Story fan, then having the same packaging as is used in the film might be worth it. But I’ve been surprised by just how much my four year old loves these toy soldiers, and just how much use they’ve got, so even at £12, they are pretty good value.
