Eco Helicopter“This sturdy Eco wooden helicopter is lovely to look at, and ethical, too – if only we had more sun!”

Initial thoughts: This solar-powered handcrafted wooden helicopter is designed for children aged 3 and over, to help them understand solar power – and it’s a great gift for kids that like vehicles. It has a real, wooden, rotating rotor blade, that moves when the helicopter is in the sun, and stops when it is in the shade.

What we liked: I liked the fact that it was ethical, powered by the sun, and the design of the helicopter itself was sturdy. It makes a pleasant change for a toy not to need batteries.

We weren’t so keen: Without any instructions inside the box or on the packaging itself, I assumed, that the helicopter would take off once powered. It didn’t.

Also, the rotor blades needed very bright sunshine to get going.  In the absence of any sunshine, but just clouds and drizzle we tried using a ceiling light which wasn’t practical because the helicopter needed to be held there constantly.  Once the blades were rotating the children wanted to play with it, but the rotor blades either got in the way of their fingers, stopped going round or came off easily.

Overall: The wooden eco helicopter looks lovely – I just wish we had more sun! It was played with a couple of times and then ignored. I can’t help feeling it was a disappointment, considering the price tag, which is just under £20. At that price, it’s an expensive ornament which will spend it’s days on the windowsill waiting for sunshine … alone.
