Initial thoughts: I think most kids are big fans of ambulance and police cars, so I expected the Mighty World Complete Emergency Response set to go down well with my four year old – and I wasn’t wrong. This comprehensive play set features an ambulance and police car, plus five figures and a host of accessories including emergency stop signs. There’s also a police motorcycle. Everything is (of course) packaged to within an inch of its life but I’m prepared to forgive this because, beyond clicking the light on top of the ambulance, there’s no assembly required with this set. Brilliant.
We liked: The vehicles are nice with opening doors – and the beautifully detailed figures fit inside. There’s also a good range of accessories and the figures are nicely made with moving arms and legs, and hats/hair that slot into a hole on the figure’s head.
We weren’t keen: We reviewed this set at the same time as we reviewed the Mighty World Complete Base Camp and although the two sets are the same price, I think the Emergency Response set was not nearly as impressive as the camping set. While it’s nice, the range of accessories isn’t as impressive, and there seem to be fewer different sorts of play that would be encouraged with this set.
A couple of small criticisms – the ambulance doors are devilishly hard to open for little fingers, and the vehicle itself is red, so British children will probably think it’s a fire engine. Also, I had about 10 pieces in the box that I couldn’t actually identify. We’ve put them in a “special” box in the kitchen where they’ll probably live until Flea leaves home for university.
Overall: The Mighty World Complete Emergency Response set is a cute, contemporary play set that’s probably ideal for children who are just starting to play with this sort of toy – I can imagine most kids of 4 upwards already have a police car and fire engine – I know it’s really an ambulance but it’s red, so Flea insists it has to be a fire engine. At almost £50, it’s not cheap, but it is nicely made, and should provide many hours of happy play.
