Initial thoughts: You get the WOW factor as soon as you take the Mercedes New SLK 09 6V Electric Car out of the very large box that it comes in and for anyone that likes cars then it is seriously cool. There is minimal construction required, you just have to attach the steering wheel and mirrors and insert the fuse. You are also supplied with a driver’s pack which includes a personalised MOT certificate, a personalised registration document, a drivers license and a stickers to make your own personalised license plate.
We Liked: The ride-on Mercedes looks fantastic, a really good likeness to the real Mercedes in a really bright shiny red. It is very eye-catching and super easy to drive and manoeuvre. It has two buttons on the right hand side, one for forward and one for reverse. It has just one foot pedal, which as soon as your child’s foot come off stops the vehicle, therefore, there is no need for a brake pedal.
We Weren’t Keen: You need to charge the car for 16 hours before use, which when you have children who don’t know that patience is a virtue can lead to lots of “is it charged yet?” In order to connect the power cable you have to lift the car up, as it is not accessible any other way, which is a little awkward.
The size was almost a problem for us. The Mercedes SLK is aimed at 3 to 5 year olds. Maxi has only just turned 5 but it was already too small for him, while Mini (who turns 4 in June) did not have much growing room left in it. Both boys found it hard to reach the forward and reverse panel for this reason.
The car only has one seat, so as you can imagine we had to employ the help of a timer, as both boys and half their friends all wanted to drive the car.
Overall: The Totscar Mercedes SLK 09 electric car looks just like the one mum and dad would drive if we had the money! The boys have had a fantastic time driving up and down the pavement on it. You do need a pretty smooth service to get the best ride and at £299 it is a considerable purchase, but one that would be well used. A real treat for some lucky child.
