So much more fun than the plastic alternatives. This shield is pleasingly solid, and charmingly traditional.

Initial Thoughts: This wooden shield is a traditional chequer design in blue paint and varnished wood.

We liked: This makes a fantastic toy to match the Aspace wooden sword, and if you buy two sets, it’ll come in handy to avoid minor wounds. It’s nice and light, and has two straps on the rear so kids can ‘wear’ the shield in a very authentic manner. This will encourage lots of imaginative play, where it’s fighting or medieval knights. As a bonus, I bet this will come in handy for school plays in future.

We weren’t keen: Honestly? I think the straps on the back are a little small so this is a toy best suited for under 8s – older kids might struggle to get their arms through the loop.

Overall: This is a great value toy and would make a fantastic accompaniment to the Aspace wooden sword. The colours are lovely and bright, and the whole thing is very nicely made indeed.
