Bookaboo is a great way to get children interested in books, it’s fun and lively and he’s just so cute!

Initial thoughts: We are big Bookaboo fans in the New Mummy household, so were thrilled to receive the DVD to watch. Bookaboo is a drum playing puppy who ‘needs a story a day or he just won’t play’, so celebrities such as Meatloaf, Amanda Holden and Al Murray come to read to him backstage. Bookaboo has donated 13,000 books to the Booktrust charity.

We liked: Bookaboo is a great way to get children interested in books: it’s fun and lively and he’s just so cute! It’s a great twist on the old Jackanory story time. BG loves the music and Bookaboo bouncing around on screen, though I fear that me and OH like it much more than she does! For this to work well then an adult should be watching it with the child so you can discuss the story like you would when reading to them. There are some great extras on the DVD for kids and grown-ups, some have to be accessed on the computer as they are CD Rom.

We weren’t keen: There are 13 episodes in the series but there are only seven on this DVD, which is disappointing, I guess the second half will be out next year. I would like to see each episode available with the relevant book, so you can back the transition from watching it on TV to reading it with the child.

Overall: A great series and DVD to help bring the love of reading back. I can now free up some space on my sky + box!
