Children will like this as a fashion accessory or toy, but I think if you want your children to really learn about telling time, a leather strap and clearer writing might be more appropriate

Initial thoughts
: Little S is now four years old and taking an interest in time. Like many children, he likes to know exactly when something is  happening – 5 minutes, 10 minutes, today or tomorrow!  The watch is pink and plastic with butterflies on the strap and a flower shaped face. The minutes are numbered around the dial and the face details ‘past’ and ‘to’. The hands detail ‘hour’ and ‘minute’. It is aimed at ages 5-8, comes with batteries and there is a girl and boy version.

S wasn’t in the slightest bit fussed by the girlie colour scheme. He got attached to it immediately and took it everywhere with him.

We liked: It’s funky and pink and Little S was definitely excited about the idea of having his very own watch. From a parent’s perspective, I liked that the ELC teaching watch also encouraged S to learn about telling the time.

We weren’t keen:
Although S loves this watch, I was less than impressed. The watch is plastic for a start so after a while S was asking me to take it off because it was too uncomfortable on his wrist. He was happier carrying it around.

I thought the design of the watch made it difficult to read. The minutes are written around the edge of the watch every 5 minutes, and the two halves are ‘past’ and ‘to’. I thought this was potentially confusing – making S think it was ’35 to the hour’ or ’45 to the hour’.

Overall: It’s a lovely watch and nicely made, and children will like this as a fashion accessory or toy. I’d consider it for younger children but I do think if children are really learning about telling time, a leather strap and clearer writing might be more appropriate. I’m usually quite impressed with ELC toys but this watch was a bit of a disappointment to me.
