Initial thoughts: I had been eagerly anticipating seeing my Little Miss, Ella, in print with the ‘It’s Your Story’ Book and I was not disappointed when it arrived and I pulled out the lovely Fairy Girl Book. It’s titled “Ella and Fairy Girl’s Unicorn Hunt”. Produced in association with ‘Bang on the Door’, the cover is heavy, laminated paper with bright, bold graphics and Ella’s picture as the face of the main character. It’s really an adorable book. The pages are a heavy paper and it’s very professionally produced. You can also have a special message written to your child which appears on the first paper page of the book as a dedication.

We liked: In order to put the wheels in motion for creating the book, we had to send a head shot of Ella, our address and town, and the name of one of Ella’s friends. This information appears in the initial pages of the book and is repeated toward the end – it makes it a very personal thing to have this information a part of the story. I particularly liked the fact that the pages are a heavyweight, slick paper. Ella is 15 months old and still assigned to board books as her over-zealous reading can lead to paper ripping! This paper will take a beating and still look great. The illustrations are very entertaining and the story progresses and builds to include all of the adventures that Ella and Fairy Girl go on. There are also a lot of things to pick out and talk about on each page which keeps the book entertaining and interesting. The last two pages of the book have a line-up of all the main characters in the book which is a great review for your child. This book will be something that Ella will enjoy for a long time to come.

We weren’t keen: The age suitability for this particular book is given as 3-8 years and after using the book I agree that this is what would be appropriate. At only 15 months Ella loved the pictures and loved her face in the book but the story is a bit too long to keep her attention. The ‘It’s Your Story’ company has other styles/types of books for  younger ages which would have been more appropriate for Ella at this time. There is a lot to see on each page which can get a bit dizzying after a while. The story is good and the illustrations are lovely but it can get a bit much after quite a few pages (the story is about 24 pages long).

Overall: I would definitely recommend the ‘It’s Your Story’ books for any child. Because you can get age specific books made, all ages would love receiving one. The price of the Fairy Girl Book was a bit steep (£19.99) but it is printed on high quality paper with a well-written story and beautiful illustrations.[By Karin]
