Flea thought this was a fantastic play set. She immediately named all the little creatures and moved them into her dollhouse, evicting the doll’s house family that were in residence.

Initial thoughts: Sylvanian Families is a whole collection of toys and playsets based around a community of woodland animals and creatures. This is a boxed set of the perfect canine nuclear family – Mum, Dad, little girl and little boy. Dressed in what really looks like Victorian clothing. Does anyone else over the age of seven find this – well – a bit weird?

We liked: Despite my reservations, Flea thought this was a fantastic play set. She immediately named all the little creatures and moved them into her dollhouse, evicting the doll’s house family that were in residence. She particularly liked that the dogs’ Victorian outfits are removable – so there’s endless entertainment to be had in dressing and undressing the little figures.

We weren’t keen: I think the reservations are mostly mine on this one. The figures aren’t particularly poseable – although the limbs move, they’re too stiff for Flea to move around, and the figures don’t stand up very easily; they’re prone to falling over a lot. The outfits are fiddly, but I don’t know if there’s a way to make a Victorian frock coat for a 1.5 inch high dog that isn’t fiddly.

Overall: I think there are cheaper play sets that are easier for little fingers to play with, but there’s no denying that Flea has enjoyed playing with this set, and hasn’t got bored in the month or so they’ve been living in the doll’s house. They seem reasonably sturdy, too.
