Initial Thoughts: When the book came I thought it was a really unusual idea, not having seen anything like this before. The children were impressed, they liked the festive illustrations. I had to quickly remove it from them before they recorded their own interpretation. I like the idea of a recordable story book it means that they can hear daddy reading something at bedtime when he can’t make it home in time. The illustrations are classic and really evoked the festive old fashioned feel of the story.

We liked: It’s a classic story, nicely presented and big enough for both the children to see easily when you are holding it. They loved they way they could hear their daddy read it even though he wasn’t there and that stimulated lots of conversation. It was really simple to record and you can simply lock it to stop the kids from erasing the recording.

We weren’t keen: We had to experiment and do a couple of pages again as daddy didn’t read it quickly enough for the allotted recording time.  The story is a classic but that does mean one or two of the phrases are a little archaic and required a bit of further explaining.

Overall: This is a really great idea; it might be a nice gift to suggest that the grandparents or far away relations buy the children. You’ll get it out year after year and when the battery goes you still have a classic story! The children enjoyed the novelty of this book, which is a good thing. However, it is quite expensive for what it is.
