Initial thoughts: It’s not often the opportunity comes up to review an advent calendar that stands nearly as tall as you are. So when Armstrong Ward  offered us the chance to review this gorgeous Pixie Advent Calendar, I nearly bit their arm off.

Designed by a company called Maileg in Denmark, these Pixies stand at nearly one and half metres high. Made from beautiful pure cotton in a gorgeous rustic, quintessentially Scandinavian style, Little Girl Pixie is something really rather special. With a tab to hang on a door or wall, her dress is covered with different size numbered pockets ready for the filling, with a rings on each hand for numbers 8 & 9, and a big pocket on her rear end for Christmas Eve.

All my Christmas decoration are of rustic design, with red and green wooden and fabric decorations on my tree, so Pixie is going fit right in.

We liked: From a practical point of view, being made of fabric makes this a good choice if, like us, you have a toddler in the house and is going to withstand curious fingers a lot better than some of the more fragile, decorative wooden calendars I have seen. This is Kai’s first Christmas as a toddler rather than a little baby and the Pixie Calendar offers lots of opportunities for fun this advent with a new discovery every day.

I like that I can choose what to put in the pockets, and will be able to tailor this each year as Kai grows and changes, making the Pixie Calendar part of his Christmas tradition year after year. The Pixie pockets would be perfect for striped candy canes or perhaps little stocking filler type toys. This year I plan on buying a big tub of plastic animals and hiding one in each pocket for Kai to find each day, with a big tractor for Christmas Eve. He’s going to be in heaven!

We weren’t keen: There is no denying that this comes with a pretty hefty price tag and is probably more than the average family would choose to spend on an Advent Calendar. However, Armstrong Ward are selling it at a reduced price in the run up to Christmas, and due to its size and sheer quality I feel that this is a fair price to ask, especially for something that will be used year after year.

It is a very distinctive style too, so if you’re not a fan of this ‘look’ then this may not be for you. My husband thinks the face is a little weird, but then he has no taste…

Overall: It’s stunning. What more can I say? Our gorgeous advent Pixie is going to be a much-loved addition to our Christmas celebrations for a long time to come.
