Paper Jamz Instant Rock Star Drums

The range of playing modes on the Paper Jamz Instant Rock Star Drums makes this quite impressive but with only three songs to tap along to you may find your young drummer could do with more.

Initial thoughts: I’m not an expert on all the different would-be rock star toys out there, but this one looks similar to one you can play on a games console – but without the actual console so it’s great for those who like to jam a bit more cheaply. We tried the rock star drums series 1 (there are lots of variations) which included the songs Woman, Rock Star and Take It To The Limit. It was very light and portable and can be connected to a special amp or played along with the corresponding guitar (both sold separately).

We liked: I have to be honest and say my favourite thing was the headphones socket (there’s also a volume control). However, my children liked rocking out to the music , it really does give children the chance to tap along like a rock legend. They can also control the drumming rhythm of the songs, play perfect drums or make up their own beats just by tapping the sensitive board. You can also change drum kits or select karaoke mode, allowing you to disable tracks in the song. The technology is really quite impressive. Being able to buy corresponding guitars also adds to the play value.

We weren’t keen on: Although it is not terribly expensive, I would have liked a couple more songs to feel it was really value for money. I think, too, it would have been more authentic to have small drumsticks to use, then you can really get a feel for being a drummer. We also found the instructions a little confusing; they talked about pressing “tom 3″ which isn’t printed on the board as actually being tom 3 so we had to keep referring to the labelled picture.

Overall: The range of playing modes, and the fact you could buy accessories to make up a small band, makes the Paper Jamz Drum kit quite an impressive toy. It is easily portable and with the headphones socket makes it a good toy to take along to family gatherings. But I would say, with only three songs included, you may find your young drummer could do with more.
