The Playmobil Unicorn in Fairy World Calendar is perfect – to open a window and receive a bit of fairy world really was heaven for my daughter.

Initial thoughts: I must admit to being a bit of a Scrooge when it comes to children and advent calendars. I mean, do they really need chocolate behind the little doors? Couldn’t a nice picture making up a nativity scene suffice? It would appear not. Especially where chocolate and toy manufacturers are concerned. But if you do want an alternative to chocolate, then you can’t go far wrong with a Playmobil advent calendar range. It would seem there is one to suit nearly everybody. The advent calendar features all the attention to detail that you’d expect from Playmobil; from a golden frog on a lily pad to a net and butterflies.

We liked: There wasn’t a lot to dislike, especially if you’re a five-year-old girl. Playmobil is one of those enduring, quality toys that enables open-ended imaginative play, so I was happy too. The Fairy World advent calendar features all the attention to detail that you’d expect from Playmobil; from a golden frog on a lily pad to a net and butterflies. To open a window every day and receive a bit of fairy world really was heaven for my daughter. I was impressed there was a sturdy cardboard scene to go with the figures, although we’d have been happy without.

We weren’t keen: Well, I’m not too keen on the price or that another simple Christmas tradition has been commercialised. However, considering how much Playmobil costs, it’s good value for money. My heart did sink a bit when I saw the folded scene that I had to make up (I am a bit challenged when it comes to following instructions). Plus, it meant this calendar took up more space than our usual ones, which are just propped up on the kitchen shelf. This one required part of the kitchen table too. But I suspect I am being a bit grumpy.

Overall: The Playmobil Unicorn in Fairy World advent calendar is a wonderful advent calendar if you have money to spare. However, if you have children of both sexes who love Playmobil then you might have to buy two calendars, or choose one of the more gender neutral options from the range! You can get a general Santa calendar from Playmobil, just don’t let them see the catalogue. I thought overall, this advent calendar has play value that extends beyond the festive season, it won’t rot their teeth or give them a sugar high just before setting off for school so perhaps it’s worth the price tag.
