Initial thoughts: What does a train mad four-year-old need? His own station that’s what but not just any old one. He needs a mega station that comes complete with a car ramp and two vehicles that let the train go past, flashing warning lights and sounds, and a dashboard that lets him be master of all he surveys which, thanks to the Tomy Hypercity Mega Station set, is quite a lot. It includes a large track layout, a shop, person and a train.
We liked: We were already familiar with Tomy’s train track, so I knew it would be quick to assemble. The plastic blue track has stood the test of time in our house and appears more durable than a wooden one we have. At first glance this set does seem quite pricey, but it offers immense play value and is versatile, enabling more track and accessories to be added. This set comes with two cars but we found any of our small, toy car collection could be used with it. My son loved being able to press a button and allow the trains to go through. I am assuming this was fun, as all I was allowed to do was drive the cars to the shop.
We weren’t keen on: This is a wonderful toy but I have to say I did feel a bit dismayed when I saw the size of the layout. I did try to get away with building a smaller version but was promptly caught by the Station Master. It could also get quite pricey, if your transport-mad child caught sight of everything else in the Hypercity range but I guess that’s where grandparents and birthdays come in. They are, though, but small gripes compared to the fun my son had.
Overall: This is excellent value for money and is the sort of toy that, once your child has outgrown it, you squirrel away in the attic for future grandchildren. We love our Mega Station set and are now eyeing up the Hypercity Rescue in the event of any train crashes.
